John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing is the only man in the history of the United States Army to be promoted to the highest rank held in his own lifetime. John Pershing was sworn in as a West Point Cadet in the fall class of 1882. His leadership abilities were noted early on, and he rose through the ranks, starting at the rank as First Corporal to the highest possible cadet rank of First Captain. At his West Point graduation, he was praised for his superb leadership skills and abilities by the superintendent of West Point, General Wesley Merritt.
